Wanting to get the few things I missed on my earlier spotting trip this week, I headed back to Portland today and got what I was after plus a few more unexpected, yet welcome sightings that made this spotting trip worthwhile in the long run. The one thing I wanted to go after was a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, which I barely missed on my last spotting trip. But this time, I finally got to see and photograph my first 737 MAX 8! I also found out after the earlier spotting trip this week that Alaska Airlines was now sending Airbus A321neos (originally destined for Virgin America) daily into Portland from San Francisco, and I ended up getting the "More to Love" livery for today's trip! The trip only got sweeter as the day progressed, as I was able catch a few surprises as well, including a few things I never photographed before. One major first for me was catching one of Elite Airways' regional jets operating a charter. Also, in addition to the usual cargo heavies and feeders, I was pleased to catch an UPS Boeing 747-400F! This 747 is only my second -400 model ever photographed as well as my first time catching the freighter variant! Along with the usual cargo feeders that started coming in during the afternoon rush, I also caught two Ameriflight Embraer EMB-120 Brasilias for the first time; I personally haven't seen the Brasilia since SkyWest Airlines stopped flying them into Portland on passenger service. It was another worth-while spotting trip during my stay in Oregon!

This airframe was the very first MAX to be delivered to Southwest Airlines, on August 29, 2017. Note the split-tip winglets and the chevrons on the engine nacelles for noise reduction, much like the 787 Dreamliner. |

Catching this beauty made this spotting trip worthwhile. |
|
Smoking the nose gear. While the Queen of the Skies is an endangered species in the passenger sector, at least the 747 has a fairly secure future as a freighter, so AvGeeks like me won't have to permanently say "good-bye" to her for quite a while... |
