About This Blog:

The primary purpose of this blog is to showcase the best of my aviation photography. As such, you will find links to my main aviation gallery on Facebook containing photos from aircraft spotting, some kind of aviation event such as air shows and fly-in events, as well as aviation museums. I also critique my flights on commercial airlines and the services they provide. Occassionally, you'll find personally written, independent articles based on news and current events involving aviation. And of course, I'll put up links to official and unofficial aviation-related websites when I find them. And when time permits, I'll talk and discuss about anything involving aviation. But most importantly, this is my way to document my journey into the aviation industry!

Pilot Life: Taking My Sister, Ellen Flying!

This evening, I finally had a chance to take my sister, Ellen on a flight that was long time-coming, as this was the first time she'd get to fly with me since I got my license! After arriving at the airport, I did my pre-flight and walk-around and fueled up before we hopped in the plane. After getting the engine started up I taxied us a short distance to do the run-ups. Once run-ups were complete, I taxied us to Runway 12, where we got airborne.

Took my sister up in N992CT!

I made a right crosswind departure to south and took us towards Payson. Like myself, my sister Ellen has a DSLR camera and she took A LOT of pictures. We flew around the valley, including a few circling laps around the Payson LDS Temple.

Taking a selfie while her brother flies the damn plane!

After screwing around the valley in the south, I decided to take us north so my sister can get a view of Provo from the air. I also climbed until I was above the Class Delta airspace ceiling controlled by Provo Airport. We flew around over the city and my sister got a view of Y Mountain and her Alma Mater, Brigham Young University.

Huh, I think I'm on candid camera!

After buzzing around over Provo, I took us back to Spanish Fork to conclude the flight. I turned us to the south and once I was clear of Provo's Class Delta airspace boundaries, I descended us over Springville and made the 45 degree entry to left downwind for Runway 12 at pattern altitude. I carefully made the descent to final approach and made a great landing on Runway 12, in spite of some crosswind conditions the AWOS was reporting. After clearing the runway, we took a selfie!

Obligatory selfie after landing!

I taxied us back the ramp and concluded the flight after engine shut-down. We had fun as we spent some quality sibling time!

Gallery Update: A Touch of Florida in Provo

In my continuing pursuit of chasing down Airbus A320s operated by Allegiant Air, Provo got a visit from another one (that I haven't photographed until today!) operating the Phoenix-Mesa route. But this time, the airframe was one sporting a special livery! This is my first time catching one of Allegiant's special promotional liveries! In addition the Airbus, I spotted a few other aircraft during this brief spotting outing.

N228NV back-taxiing on 13 getting ready to return to Phoenix-Mesa as AAY133. Gotta say though, the "Visit Florida" livery is somewhat out of place here in Provo as Allegiant does not have many offerings to fly to Florida from the western half of the country. The airline does however fly to St. Petersburg/Clearwater International from Phoenix on a seasonal basis.

Prior to acquisition by Allegiant, this airframe has an extensive history serving with several European airlines carrying British and later German registrations. Previously flew for Hamburg Airways as D-AHHD.

AAY133 beginning takeoff roll on 13. I got the "Visit Florida" special, now I gotta get Allegiant's "Make A Wish" livery that's on another one of their A320s; but it's still on the east coast as of right now...

Pilot Life: Taking My Friend, Kalissa Flying!

After spending some time in Oregon (and not flying!), it's time to get back in the air to practice some instrument approach procedures and get proactive with my flying, and that's exactly what I did today. I also invited my friend Kalissa to join me as a passenger for today's flight; believe it or not, she has never flown in an airplane in her life, which I found hard to believe initially! After arriving at the airport, we headed to the hangar where the plane was parked and I conducted my pre-flight and walk-around. I then towed the plane over to the fuel pumps and topped off the tanks before hopping in with my passenger and getting the engine started.

Went up to practice instrument approaches with a friend on board in N968CT.

After start-up, I taxied us over to the run-up pad, did my before-takeoff checks, taxied to the runway, started takeoff roll and we got airborne. I took us west towards Fairfield so I could practice the ILS 13 approach into Provo. I got in radio contact with the approach controller in Salt Lake City and they gave us radar vectors. From there, we flew over Utah Lake and my passenger, Kalissa enjoyed the view as I flew the approach profile. With help from Salt Lake Approach, I was able to get established on the ILS 13 localizer into Provo. I was eventually instructed to call up Provo Tower, which I did; I requested a touch-and-go for Runway 13 followed by a left turn out back to the north (I was replicating as much as I can what I did when I shot these approaches with my flight instructor on recent flights). Tower cleared me and I continued my approach. Without the foggles, I was able to visually see what this instrument approach procedure was and feel like I've gained a better understanding of the principles at hand.

I continued my approach and made a smooth touchdown! I throttled forward and got us back up in the air, executing a left crosswind on the departure end of the runway. I then proceeded eastbound until over the Interstate, followed by another left turn to the north. This allowed Kalissa a good view of Y Mountain, an icon of the university she attends! Once out of Provo's Class Delta airspace, I got back into contact with the approach controls and requested radar vectors to the localizer for another shot at the ILS 13 approach for Provo; my request was granted and I flew the headings they called out for me to fly on. Once again, I got established on the localizer and was cleared for the ILS approach. Once again, they advised me to call up Provo Tower, which I did. This time I requested a touch-and-go, followed by a straight-out departure to Spanish Fork; once again, I was cleared for touch-and-go with a straight-out departure approved.

Once again, I continued my approach and executed another smooth landing on Runway 13 before throttling forward to get back in the air, completing the touch-and-go. I departed Provo's airspace southbound and we made our way back to Spanish Fork. I approached the airport from the northeast, crossed over midfield above pattern altitude, and made a descending right turn to enter the the
45 degree angle to downwind for Runway 30. Once established on the downwind leg, I configured the plane for landing, got established on final approach and made a smooth landing. I cleared the runway and taxied us back to the hangar. Once there, we took a selfie!

Selfie after landing!

I shut the engine down and called it a successful flight and a fun evening outing with a first-timer in an airplane! After doing post-flight, I towed the plane into the hangar and we headed home.

Gallery Update: More New Sightings from Portland!

Wanting to get the few things I missed on my earlier spotting trip this week, I headed back to Portland today and got what I was after plus a few more unexpected, yet welcome sightings that made this spotting trip worthwhile in the long run. The one thing I wanted to go after was a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, which I barely missed on my last spotting trip. But this time, I finally got to see and photograph my first 737 MAX 8! I also found out after the earlier spotting trip this week that Alaska Airlines was now sending Airbus A321neos (originally destined for Virgin America) daily into Portland from San Francisco, and I ended up getting the "More to Love" livery for today's trip! The trip only got sweeter as the day progressed, as I was able catch a few surprises as well, including a few things I never photographed before. One major first for me was catching one of Elite Airways' regional jets operating a charter. Also, in addition to the usual cargo heavies and feeders, I was pleased to catch an UPS Boeing 747-400F! This 747 is only my second -400 model ever photographed as well as my first time catching the freighter variant! Along with the usual cargo feeders that started coming in during the afternoon rush, I also caught two Ameriflight Embraer EMB-120 Brasilias for the first time; I personally haven't seen the Brasilia since SkyWest Airlines stopped flying them into Portland on passenger service. It was another worth-while spotting trip during my stay in Oregon!

Catching this beauty made this spotting trip worthwhile.

Smoking the nose gear. While the Queen of the Skies is an endangered species in the passenger sector, at least the 747 has a fairly secure future as a freighter, so AvGeeks like me won't have to permanently say "good-bye" to her for quite a while...
