About This Blog:

The primary purpose of this blog is to showcase the best of my aviation photography. As such, you will find links to my main aviation gallery on Facebook containing photos from aircraft spotting, some kind of aviation event such as air shows and fly-in events, as well as aviation museums. I also critique my flights on commercial airlines and the services they provide. Occassionally, you'll find personally written, independent articles based on news and current events involving aviation. And of course, I'll put up links to official and unofficial aviation-related websites when I find them. And when time permits, I'll talk and discuss about anything involving aviation. But most importantly, this is my way to document my journey into the aviation industry!

Gallery Update: New Years Weekend Spotting at Portland

Hope you're all having an enjoyable holiday season. I've been back in Oregon with my family since late last week getting some much-needed R&R. This will be my final gallery update for 2017, one of the most eventful, yet hellish years I've had. I did this last year and I did it again this year; I went spotting at PDX on New Years weekend. I've been doing some research and keeping an eye on social media platforms for aviation in the Pacific Northwest in order to plan a worthwhile spotting trip to Portland International Airport while I was home for the holidays. Looking at FlightAware, I noticed a few incoming flights might have been worthwhile chasing, but in typical airline fashion, things changed! For starters, the Cathay Pacific Cargo flight was scheduled to be using a 747-400, but it ended up being the wet-leased Atlas Air 747-8F that I photographed earlier this summer! And a Southwest Airlines flight from Kansas City was scheduled to fly a 737 MAX 8 (THAT would've been quite a catch for me at the end of the year!), but it ended up being a regular 737 NG.

But the trip wasn't a total waste, as I was able to catch a few things; the first (and perhaps the main reason for going!) was an opportunity to catch Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris at PDX in daylight! Volaris began thrice-weekly flights between Guadalajara, Mexico and Portland on December 3, 2014. The only reason I never chased Volaris since then was mainly due to the fact that all their flights to and from Guadalajara were red-eye flights, so I would never have been able to get a decent shot of one of their planes. It was only recently I found out that Volaris' Saturday flights were conducted in the afternoon, so I knew I had to jump at the opportunity!

The second reason why I wanted to go spotting in Portland again was because of Horizon Air. The Alaska Airlines regional subsidiary only just recently started applying the new livery onto their DHC-8-400s and I wanted to see if I could catch one. I caught TWO Q400s in the new Alaska livery! Along with two Q400s in the new livery, I got a few more E-Jets operated by Horizon, and a retro livery from American Airlines!
