About This Blog:

The primary purpose of this blog is to showcase the best of my aviation photography. As such, you will find links to my main aviation gallery on Facebook containing photos from aircraft spotting, some kind of aviation event such as air shows and fly-in events, as well as aviation museums. I also critique my flights on commercial airlines and the services they provide. Occassionally, you'll find personally written, independent articles based on news and current events involving aviation. And of course, I'll put up links to official and unofficial aviation-related websites when I find them. And when time permits, I'll talk and discuss about anything involving aviation. But most importantly, this is my way to document my journey into the aviation industry!

Gallery Update: An Overcast Day in Portland

I woke up to overcast skies this morning, so I knew I probably wasn't going flying today. I was fine with that because I've been wanting to get spotting trip up to Portland again when certain opportunities presented themselves. I've been keeping an eye on the morning departure schedules out of PDX the last several weeks and my main objective was one of the two Hawaiian Airlines flights; since I last photographed two of their A320neos, equipment substitution has become frequent, showing that delivery delays of the new narrow-body planes due to engine issues are still a problem. As a result, Hawaiian has sent Airbus A330s as well as Boeing 767s back onto certain routes where needed. I was specifically after a 767 in Hawaiian's colors because I have never photographed one before and I needed to jump at the opportunity given that the airline was in the process of retiring them; in fact, there are only six 767s left in Hawaiian's fleet as of this writing! Of course, I was successful in getting my main objective (albeit, after a two hour delay from the flight's originally-scheduled departure time!)!

In addition to finally catching one of Hawaiian Airlines' 767, there were a few notable catches made on this trip, including the final Horizon Air college special livery I haven't "properly" photographed until today, as well as bunch of F-15s from the military side of the airfield!

United Parcel Service - UPS Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-11F (N270UP) parked on the cargo ramp. In the past, there was usually an A300 or a 767 parked at PDX during the day, so it's quite unusual to see an MD-11 during the day. Arrived early this morning from Louisville as UPS974 and later scheduled to depart around midnight tonight back to Louisville as UPS991.

Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767-33A/ER (N582HA) 'Ake 'Ake departing two hours late on 10R as HAL25 for Honolulu. I have FINALLY photographed one of Hawaiian's 767s! And just in time too, as they are slated to be retired this year! As of today only six 767s remain in Hawaiian's fleet.

Hawaiian Airlines brought in 14 leased 767s into their fleet some time between 2002 and 2003 as part of their then-fleet modernization program. Hawaiian has operated a total of 18 767s in its history and began retiring them once they've started taking delivery of Airbus A330-200.

Due to delivery delays of Hawaiian Airlines' A321neos because of engine defects of the Pratt & Whitney PW1100Gs, the 767s have stuck around a little longer than expected.

Horizon Air (d/b/a Alaska Airlines) Bombardier DHC-8-402 Dash 8 Q400 (N450QX) taxiing to the gate after arriving as QXE2277 from Kalispell.

Massachusetts Air National Guard McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle (80-0004) from the 104th Fighter Wing (104 FW), the Barnstormers operating as part of Rage Flight, "Rage 1" airborne off 10R. The 142nd Fighter Wing deployed to Europe earlier this year. Upon their return, several of their Eagles had some major maintenance issues, so a few F-15s from Massachusetts are now on loan to the Redhawks.

Oregon Air National Guard McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle (84-0031) as "Rage 2" airborne off 10R. Note the colored-in Redhawk logo on the tail; I've waited a long time to photograph this particular Eagle!
