About This Blog:

The primary purpose of this blog is to showcase the best of my aviation photography. As such, you will find links to my main aviation gallery on Facebook containing photos from aircraft spotting, some kind of aviation event such as air shows and fly-in events, as well as aviation museums. I also critique my flights on commercial airlines and the services they provide. Occassionally, you'll find personally written, independent articles based on news and current events involving aviation. And of course, I'll put up links to official and unofficial aviation-related websites when I find them. And when time permits, I'll talk and discuss about anything involving aviation. But most importantly, this is my way to document my journey into the aviation industry!

Gallery Update: Chasing International Airlines of PDX

I got an early start to my Labor Day weekend by getting Friday off today. So I decided to go do a spotting trip to PDX today and ultimately chase after some European metal. Fridays happen to be the one day of the week where Icelandair and Condor Flugdienst are operating flights out of PDX on the same day; I figured this might be the last time I'll catch these two European liveries at PDX before they temporarily cease their respective routes for the winter (starting in October) before restarting for next year's summer seasonal services. And I got exactly what I was after for this spotting trip. Today, I photographed all but one foreign carriers currently serving Portland; the only one missing is Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris, which is impossible to get at PDX because while they fly daily, they fly LATE AT NIGHT. Yeah, I'm not willing to do that; I'll spot Volaris elsewhere... Here's the link:

Portland (PDX) 17

And the preview with focus on the two seasonal European carriers:

United Airlines Airbus A320-232 (N404UA) departing via 28R.

SeaPort Airlines Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (N208TW) airborne after departing via 28R.

JetBlue Airways Airbus A320-232 (N656JB) 'California Blue' arriving on 28R.

First international carrier of the day: Air Canada Jazz Bombardier CL-600-2B19 CRJ-200ER (C-FIJA) rotating off 28R for departure to Calgary.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-3H4 (N613SW) taxiing for departure.

Horizon Air Bombardier DHC-8-402 Dash 8 Q400 (N446QX) airborne after departing via 28L. This must have been a really light load for it be airborne this soon.

Cessna 750 Citation X+ (N68ES) clearing the runway after arrival on 28R.The Citation X+, an upgraded version of the Citation X comes standard with elliptical winglets (available as after-market for standard Citation X's), and upgraded Rolls-Royce/Allison AE3007C2 turbojet engines.

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-890 (N528AS) arriving on 28L. Note the split-scimitar winglets.

I FINALLY got the "Go Russell" special livery! Alaska Airlines' Seattle Sea Hawks special liveried Boeing 737-990/ER (N453AS) departing on 28L.

Second international carrier of the day: Condor Flugdienst Boeing 767-330/ER (D-ABUD) arriving from Frankfurt on 28R. I'm happy I finally caught a standard Condor/Thomas Cook livery.

Originally part of the Lufthansa Group, Condor was eventually acquired by the Thomas Cook Group starting in 2000. But the airline still partners up with Lufthansa through it's passenger traveler loyalty program and Condor passengers can access Lufthansa's business lounges in Frankfurt Airport.

While this livery is more standard than the one I saw in July, this "Sunny Heart" livery is actually interim colors. The current livery (which I have yet to photograph) has gray and yellow in place of the blue while still retaining the "Sunny Heart" on the vertical stabilizer.

United Airlines Boeing 737-824 (N33266) clearing the active after arrival on 28R. Note the split-scimitar winglets.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-3Q8 (N685SW) departing on 28L. This airframe previously served in Europe for British Airways, Dan-Air London, Britannia Airways, Orion Airways (G-BOWR) and Air Belgium (OO-ILF) aircraft.

Horizon Air Bombardier DHC-8-402 Dash 8 Q400 (N437QX) Boise State University Broncos special rotating from 28L.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-8H4 (N8625A) departing on 28L.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7CT (N570WN) arriving on 28L. Former C-FWAO of WestJet.

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-890 (N508AS) arriving on 28L.

SkyWest Airlines (d/b/a Alaska Airlines) Bombardier CL-600-2C10 CRJ-701ER (N224AG) taxiing out for departure. Catch these Alaska-SkyWest CRJs while you still can because they're being replaced by the Embraer E-175 after SkyWest exercised their options into orders.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7Q8 (N799SW) taxiing out for departure. A former International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) bird and the same aircraft that was involved in a runway overrun incident at Chicago-Midway International Airport on April 26, 2011.

JetBlue Airways Airbus A320-232 (N656JB) 'California Blue' taxiing out for departure.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7CT (N567WN) arriving on 28L. Formerly with WestJet as C-FWAF.

American Airlines (US Airways) Airbus A320-232 (N601AW) taxiing out for departure. Catch these US Airways birds while you still can before they get "Americanized."

Horizon Air Bombardier DHC-8-402 Dash 8 Q400 (N440QX) Oregon State University Beavers special arriving on 28L. Note the updated Beaver logo on the vertical stabilizer.

SeaPort Airlines Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (N1154F) getting ready to taxi out for departure.

Compass Airlines (d/b/a Delta Connection) Embraer E-175LR (N602CZ) arriving on 28R from Los Angeles.

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-790 (N615AS) in the new subtly revised livery arriving on 28R. My first time seeing Alaska's revised livery and I've been waiting for a shot of this since it was first unveiled.

Beechcraft Super King Air B300 (N923FP) climbing away after departure via 28R.

Third international carrier of the day: Jazz Air (d/b/a Air Canada Express) De Havilland  Canada DHC-8-311 (C-FTAK) bound for Vancouver, B.C. after departure from 28R.

SkyWest Airlines (d/b/a United Express) Bombardier CL-600-2C10 CRJ-701ER (N712SK) taxiing out for departure.

Embraer EMB-500 Phenom 100 (N582JS) airborne after departure from 28R.

Fourth international carrier of the day: Icelandair Boeing 757-23N Magni (TF-FIC) taxiing out for departure to Reykjavik-Keflavik. Magni is the name of one of two craters in Iceland that were tailor-made for tourists in the first stage of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in March 2010.

This isn't Icelandair's standard livery; this airframe was first delivered in June 2000 to American Trans Air as N526AT. Then it went to Russian carrier VIM Avia as EI-LTY. It then went to Lithuania and flew charter for Aurela as LY-SKJ. After Aurela ceased operations in 2013, the aircraft was acquired by Icelandair and registered as TF-FIC. The reason for the all-white (a.k.a. Euro-white) fuselage is because Icelandair up until recently leased this aircraft to two different operators; the first was to the United Nations for official UN charter operations and then to Air Niugini, the national airline of Papa New Guinea.

Magni beginning rotation off 28R.

I've heard spotters complain about how much they hate Euro-white liveries because it's so dull; I'm starting to see why and agree with them... That being said, I have yet to photograph a standard Icelandair livery.

SkyWest Airlines (d/b/a Delta Connection) Bombardier CL-600-2C10 CRJ-700 (N609SK) clearing the runway after arrival on 28R, to finish out the day.
