About This Blog:

The primary purpose of this blog is to showcase the best of my aviation photography. As such, you will find links to my main aviation gallery on Facebook containing photos from aircraft spotting, some kind of aviation event such as air shows and fly-in events, as well as aviation museums. I also critique my flights on commercial airlines and the services they provide. Occassionally, you'll find personally written, independent articles based on news and current events involving aviation. And of course, I'll put up links to official and unofficial aviation-related websites when I find them. And when time permits, I'll talk and discuss about anything involving aviation. But most importantly, this is my way to document my journey into the aviation industry!

Gallery Update: A Quick Visit to Aurora

Hard to believe I haven't done any photography at the Aurora State Airport since 2015 and this is only my second time getting some photography there, even after flying in and out of there during the course of my flight training! If I do decide to go forward with some potential plans with regards to my flight training, I could very-well be frequenting Aurora often for my multi-engine training! I decided to pay Aurora Flight Training, a flight school that apparently has a flight club-like feel in terms of aircraft rental rates a visit because I only just recently found out about this place. As it turns out, the flight school/club has a Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche (a nice one at that!) available for multi-engine training. I had an opportunity to get up-close with the plane and got some pictures. I may very-well decide to pursue my multi-engine add-on with this plane and flight school!

Gallery Update: Velocity Sighting in Salem!

After getting back from a local flight, I got a few quick shots from around the ramp area. One aircraft that caught my eye was a Velocity XL, a home-built canard pusher design based off of it's predecessor, the Velocity SE!

Gallery Update: Sunday Redemption at PDX!

Ignoring the fact that I did a spotting trip to Portland just three days ago, I still had an objective towards redemption that could only be spotted on Sundays! Late last month, I tried to chase down a Kalitta Air Boeing 767 freighter but I missed it by a matter of minutes! Since then, I kept an eye on FlightRadar24 at the Sunday morning arrival and departure trends, and lo and behold, the Kalitta Air 767 that I've been wanting to photograph has been making runs up and down the west coast on Sundays! So once again, I set out to catch this rare sight and I'm happy to say that this Sunday morning go at PDX was much more successful!

In addition to Kalitta Air's 767, I was also pleased to catch a few special liveries. I also finally got to see Sun Country Airlines' newest livery for the first time. I also got to photograph one of Jazz Air's Dash 8s after being absent for a few months due to COVID-19 restrictions.

American Airlines Airbus A321-231 (N578UW) in the US Airways heritage livery taxiing for departure as AAL1929 for Charlotte. Very pleased to finally catch the US Airways heritage livery! As the merger between American Airlines and US Airways was wrapping up, this airframe (originally for US Airways) was painted in the final US Airways livery, but was given the American Airlines title and logo straight out of the factory. So technically, this A321 actually never had the US Airways name painted on its fuselage when it was delivered.

On Sundays, Kalitta Air does a west coast run on the behalf of DHL doing a Los Angeles-Seattle-Portland-Los Angeles run. On weekdays, Kalitta bypasses Portland and does a Los Angeles-Seattle-Vancouver-Seattle-Los Angeles run.

Airframe first delivered in May 1994 as A4O-GY for Gulf Air. It then flew for Transaero Airlines as EI-UNB from January 2008 until the Russian carrier ceased operations in 2015. Kalitta Air took possession of the airframe in January 2017 and had it converted for cargo in Mexico City a year later; conversion was completed in June 2018.

Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737-83N (N831SY) arriving on 28R as SCX293 from Minneapolis/St. Paul. My first time seeing the newest livery by Sun Country Airlines!

Previously registered as N860AM with Aeromexico.

Sun Country unveiled this livery in mid-2018 after conducting a vote among its employees. While it is a bold and visually appealing livery, many have referred to this color scheme as the airline's "Tide Pods" livery, which was an unfortunate coincidence because the livery colors are the same as Tide's laundry detergent pods that became the center of an Internet meme, which involves a dare to intentionally consume the pods known as the "Tide Pods Challenge" from late-2017 to mid-2018.

Frontier Airlines Airbus A320-251N (N335FR) "Jo Jo the Grizzly Bear" arriving on 28R as FFT2171 from Las Vegas.

Jazz Air (d/b/a Air Canada Express) Bombardier DHC-8-402 Dash 8 Q400 (C-GJZN) airborne off 28R as JZA8120 for Vancouver. Air Canada resumed flying between Portland and Vancouver earlier this month. While the border between the U.S. and Canada is still closed to normal travel due to COVID-19 restrictions, these flights are in place to transport essential workers. Either way, it's nice to see some Canadian presence in PDX after a five month absence.

Gallery Update: Chasing Wide-bodies at PDX!

Last night, I noticed on FlightRadar24 that a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 was scheduled to fly into Portland on a military charter. On top of that, it looked to be a good day to go spotting for a Thursday on a summer day (in spite of the fact that air travel is still down and recovery is still at a plateau due to the repercussions from the COVID-19 pandemic!) so I decided to make the trip despite the fact I was tired from work!

Aside from the United Triple 7, I also finally saw Cathay Pacific's new, modified livery on one of their Boeing 747-8Fs, as well as a few special liveries I've been waiting to get. I also got some military aircraft action as well!

On board is the first of two groups of Oregon National Guard members of Task Force Arrow after a yearlong mobilization overseas in Qatar. The Task Force underwent a COVID-19-mandated 14-day quarantine at Ft. Bliss, Texas before being flown to PDX.

Since United doesn't fly their Triple 7s out to PDX on any scheduled flights, this was quite a treat to catch! UAL2572 taxied over to the Boeing ramp to offload the taskforce.
